Defeated the Ghamcunin in this heroic way, Mankind replace them in the mining fields of those far-away planets... -------------------------------------- Chapter 1.- "Ring around the Sun ".- Kirk, Sulu, and 200 other Captains of the Fleet were present in the big room ,29 floors under the surface of the earth. This was Base 51, and the reunion was held by the President of the Federation of Planets, Mr. Caledon Clements. -"This meeting is adjourned. The President will speak."- A young woman said, using the Starfleet uniform. -"Good evening , Commanders and Captains of the Fleet. We are here to assign the sectors of defense. To all is known we are in a three dimensional universe; if we post a fleet on Pluto s orbit, the enemy could arrive Earth by any other part where Pluto is not placed. So we must did a ring round the Solar System." All the people there gave a sigh. -"Yes ! There is a lot of space to be patrolling ! But it is the only way! Also, we are going to use as much drones as we can ! Now, to do this in a democratic way, we are sorting the places, so nobody will say we have some favoritism of any kind. Bring the ballots !" Kirk was amazed. Then, the rumors were true: there will be not a search for the enemy in high space ! He remembers his men at 631, and trembles... AT the end of the meeting, he know the site assigned to the "Enterprise" to stand: in the opposite side of Pluto! He marched to the shuttle, and the vessel began to mount; after some minutes, the "Enterprise" was in full view. Spock saluted him, when entering the main deck. -"Welcome, Sir. We have the readout ." -"Oh, yes! And which vessels are our next links in the chain round the Solar System?" -"The "Pegasus" at our right, and the "Parlons II" at our left. Kirk was astounded, hearing the name of the second ship, so he asked:"- Why, they named another ship as the loosed one?" -A sphere, in fact."- Spock rise his right eyebrow. -"Oh; and his captain is ?" -"Is her captain: Maora Noemi." -"I cannot believe it ! Why she is not in the Headquarters?"- -"Ask her, Sir ."- Spock replied. Kirk coughed out one recognizable e term: "Vulcan." Spock's eyebrows shot up."Huh?" "The Vulcan! Why they dont help us!" Spock regained his composure and gave his best smug smile. "You'd make a better chief prickling me ?" -Oh, no!"- Kirk smiled, and told Uhura to communicate with the "Parlons II". After some seconds, she said:"- Captain Noemi at the phone, Sir!" -Put her in the main screen."- Kirk said. Then he speaks on the microphone.-" -"Captain Kirk ! Good to see you!"- Noemi said, smiling .She was beautiful in his red dress. -"Thanks you! We must be very alert, as Pluto it s in the other side and this could be the portal the aliens choose to use ."- Kirk told her. -"Interesting . Could you came here, Captain? With some of your officers, and we could have a dinner -party."-Maora said. -"I will be at eight."- Kirk accepted. Then they finished the communication. Kirk went to the Infirmary, where Doctor McCoy was looking by a microscope. Hearing the footsteps, he looked up and saw Kirk -"Oh, I see you are needing your medicine!"- And walking to the desk, takes a couple of glasses and pours a thumbnail of scotch in them, and offers a glass to Kirk. -"Thanks."- he said, drinking it in one gulp. McCoy served him another shot, and said:"- Jim! Guess you have a problem!" Metcalfe merely shrugged and thumbed toward the desk:"-What were you looking at the microscope?" -"A piece of a Ghamcunin! As you know , they gave us doctors a piece of information and also pieces of aliens, to be studying them. They differ not much from the squids from Earth; the difference is the intelligence ."- McCoy replied, sipping his scotch with delight. The room was rather barren, as was to be expected. Officers' quarters had been used little since the Enterprise return to the Solar System, and they retained the antiseptic feeling of something kept in storage. -We are to go to a dinner, this evening."- Kirk said. -Oh? Where?"- The eyes of the doctor shined for a second. -"To the "Parlons II"! Do you know who is her captain?" -"No idea."- -"Maora Noemi! She seems to have lost her commanding post."- Kirk notice. -"Well, I will be delighted to see her bosom"- McCoy said, smiling. -"Yes, I saw her in the main screen . A nice woman and a better commander."- Kirk replied, leaving the Infirmary. In the corridor, Nurse Chapel approaches him, saying:"- Can I speak to you a moment, Sir? I have a question to ask." -Ask me." -"Not here, Sir. Could it be in your cabin?" Kirk said yes, and they walked in silence to his cabin; there, after the door closed itself automatically, she grabs her right arm, saying:"- Help me , Sir ! I am suffering so much!" -Tell me, I am here to help you". Kirk said, adding inside of his brain:" AS I can." She walks to the other part of the room, seating in his bed, and said:"- I am in love, Sir." -"And I guess who you love "- Kirk informed her. -"Do you know ? Well, I love Mr. Spock since a lot of months ago! But he is so serious! He will never notice me !" -"A pity. A waste."- Kirk said. -"A waste, Sir? "- She opened a lot her blue eyes. -"Er...well, you have a nice body, Nurse Christine Chapel. Your body ask the penetration, if you pardon me to say."- Kirk informed her again. She considered the captain's gesture; it was obviously meant to make her feel comfortable in her relatively new surroundings. -Perhaps you are saying that to help me, Captain. "-Chapel said. Kirk was almost out of his depth; he was also very excited by the perfume the lady was using. So he seats at her side, and began caressing her, saying:"- I think the Vulcan cannot have sexual intercourse with normal women. I mean, with Earth women." -Do you think so?"- She asked, worried. -"The Vulcan have a ritual where they mated , but it takes several years between one sexual intercourse and the other. So you can wait for a decade and for what? For just one intercourse! And the Vulcan have a big penis."- He said. -Oh! "- She blushed, and Kirk felt her heart. It was pounding very fast. -"I can love you."- Kirk said, and he heard his own voice, disbelieving it was him ! -"Oh, you are so good to me !"- She said, and grabs him fast. Kirk loved her for a couple of hours; the woman was big and strong, and he ends totally exhausted. She dressed herself and said:" You have taken a burden out of me! Thanks you ,Captain, for your advice !" And she left the room. Kirk sighed; he seems to have been used! He slept a little, and was awaked by Doctor McCoy -Awake! The dinner party is here !"- -Oh! I guess I sleep a little too much."- Kirk said, looking at the doctor. -"Yes ! Perhaps you committed a little exertion on your body."- -"No, I didn t exercise myself to-day."- Kirk replied, afraid that the good doctor could read in his eyes. -Well, seeing you are awake, I will wait you in the transporter."- McCoy informed . And went out. Kirk went to the Deck, and asked Spock:"- Are there any information about the Ghamcunins?" -No, Sir."- He said, looking at Uhura. The black woman denied with the head. -"All right, then! We are on duty, no matter we are to dine at the "Parlons II"! So you call us back the second you notice something in the screen!- Kirk ordered him. -All right, Sir ! I ll call you back." Kirk went to the Transporter; he saw McCoy and Chapel waiting there. -"Up we go."- Told them, and they step on the dais. Scotty managed the apparatus, and they were send to the "Parlons II." -"Good evening , Captain! "- Noemi told him , when seeing him standing at the dais of the "Parlons II". -Thanks, Captain Noemi! Permit me to introduce you to Christine Chapel, and Doctor McCoy!" -"Well, Captain, you know I have met them before."- She told him. -"Yes, I know that. Well, you have a lot to tell me , Captain Noemi!"- Kirk said. She presented them all his officers; then they passed to the dinning room, that was rather small, as the Spheres were of Ghamcunin origins, and no dinning halls were in them, originally.... As a matter of protocol, she knew she should find the doctor and thank her. Puzzling to her, though, was the fact that she wanted to talk with him again. -Doctor McCoy: tell me about the Ghamcunin biology!"- She asked him, when seeing how she was drinking the wine. -"Well, madam ! They differ of us as much as the squid differs from man! They can swim in their original seas, swamps , or walk upright on dry land. Very strong animals, indeed."- He said, somewhat dizzy. She straightened her shoulders and stretched her stiff back. The furlough between missions had been a long and eventful one. The table was crowded and dark, especially near her table in the back, but she had brought Simm Dug here to cheer him up. She had met him on his way to report to Earth and convinced him that they need him at the "Parlons"; it was a good doctor, pity he was a pigmy. Also he had a real big amount of jokes in his repertory, and now he was telling a very piquant one... Kirk was almost sleeping; he thought Maora were going to spend the evening with him, but in her place, Brenda Leich was seated at his side; she was fat, a real talker, and this time she was explained everyone how she could sense a Ghamcounin Sphere with her equipment on board the "Parlons II".... -We are going now, gentlemen! "- Kirk said, suddenly. And then Maora ask the time for one last drink (one of a recent series of several.) Kirk had reluctantly agreed and was reluctantly drinking. His silence disturbed her, and she made another attempt to make him talk. "Did you know that I was reappointed Captain ?" "I assumed you would be." Of course he assumed it; it followed that she would be given her old job back. Not much to do in the Solar System ! But couldn't he say more than just the obvious? She tried again. "What did your assignment say?" "Security Chief." He did not look up from the glass he was contemplating. It hadn't been raised in several minutes, only contemplated. "That drink's getting quite bit of your attention." She said devilishly, "Does whisky really have more fire than I do?" Brushing the hair she had tousled annoyedly back into place with his free hand, he muttered, "I'm sorry if I'm boring you." "You might try speaking. You know, words?" "Anything in particular, or would you Just like me to babble?" She sighed heavily."Your transmission is faint, Mr. Kirk. Can you boost your signal? There's a definite breakdown in communications here. Take it from me, I know what I'm talking about." Kirk suddenly downed the last of his drink with a gulp that alarmed her. "Kirk, please tell me what's wrong!" She said in a desperate, final attempt. He wiped the whisky from his lips. "Nothing." "Why do you keep saying that?" "Maora," he began painfully, "...it's nothing." "Dammit, Kirk! We've been here half an hour and you haven't so much as smiled! Nothing's wrong!" She took a breath. Losing her temper would only make him worse. "Are you worried about the Enterprise? Are you nervous?" "I've been waiting for this chance for years," he said unconvincingly. "Then what? " "Look, I am a little dizzy myself...could you carry me to my bed?"- Kirk asked. She almost fainted, but agreed, and went with the captain Kirk to the Transporter, and they were all beamed to the NCC-1701. Kirk was proud, so he managed to walk upright until they were inside his cabin; there he slumped down, and Maora used all her strength to carry him on the bed. Kirk begun to snore , and she takes his shoes off. -Then he return to the Transporter, where she was beamed to his own ship. Spock was utterly shocked, but said nothing... At the other "Day", Kirk asks for a cup of coffee, and went to the Deck, where he lean on Uhura s control table, saying:"I guess I acted like a drunkard, last night." Uhura smiled gently and clutched his hand over the table. "You could have been perfect, but you're not. You are one of the finest officers in the fleet." He laughed coldly."Oh? Is that honor determined by how many people came here as drunk as I was?" -"Of course !"- Uhura laughed .He winced, as any sound makes his head like cracking. He glanced at his watch, mumbling, "-What about the "Parlons II" location?" -"It moves to the farther side, Captain. But still in our radarscope reach." -Call the captain there."- Kirk asked. When in the phone, he said:"- I am glad you take me home, Maora. I own you one." -"Do not mention it, Captain ! I was delighted to hear you snoring!" - Maora laughed. -"Don t laugh ! My head.."- Kirk announced... -Captain: there is movement in front of us."- Spock said from his place. Kirk looked at the main screen; a speck of light was coming from deep space. -"Condition red! All men to their posts! "- Yelled Kirk, and by the phone, he adds:"- There s something coming from outer space !" Then he run to his seat. -One vessel only, Captain! It s slowing down!"- Chekov told him. -"Uhura! Try to communicate with them!"- Kirk said, looking the incoming figure; it was not round and not a diamond-shaped vessel... Uhura turn his legs, saying:"- It s a earth-ship ! His captain wants to talk with the Captain!" -Put it on screen."- Kirk asked. The main screen shows a packed main cabin, with several people looking the camera; one of them was a tall thin man , who said:"- I am Sir Lawrence Howlier, Captain and owner of the "Aullador"!" -You must stop to be searched, sir ! "- Kirk asked-"We are defending the Solar System here !" -All right, Sir ! You can came in when you wish!"- Sir Lawrence... Kirk called three guards, and went to the ship "Aullador". When he was inside, he shrinked his nose; the air was stale ! -"Welcome to my humble ship! "- Sir Lawrence said, looking at them. -"I am Captain Kirk, from the "Enterprise". From where are you coming through?" -"From ....in the Orion Constellation! I was there doing researches...lots of fossil sites there...and then the war begun! I came here as fast as I could."- Sir Lawrence said, and begun presenting his crew. There were just four other, all men, and they looked disheveled, bearded and smelly. -Guess we not look as good as we should. But you see, there is water just to drink on board. Three months in deep space ! I starve for a good steak!"- Sir Lawrence said, smiling gently. -I can invite you to our ship, Sir. But first, I must ask you to let my men revise your cargo."- Kirk said. -"By all means, Captain! Diego: show the men our ship and cargo bays !"- Sir Lawrence ordered to one of his men... After the revision, Kirk said:"- We can take some of your men ,so they can have a proper meal, and a bath." -That will be fine , Captain! I would be very pleased ! "- Sir Lawrence said. From the "Enterprise" Uhura called Kirk by the visophone, and said:"The Captain of the "Parlons II" on the line, Captain!" -Put her in." -"Captain Kirk: are you inside that little ship?"- Said the feminine voice of Maora. -Yes.Want to came in?" -Of course ! "- She answered. -"Came in, now!"- Kirk invited. Soon she appeared, together with two other crew members, inside the "Aullador". She said:"-Oh, I never was inside a hand-made vessel before!"- -Be my guest, milady! I am Sir Lawrence Howlier, captain of this ship! " -From where did you came?" -From .....in the Orion Constellation! I am a anthropologist and a chemical engineer, too ! "- Sir Lawrence said, eating her with his eyes. He had two years without seen a woman ! He insisted in to show her the whole ship...and at his return, Maora was tired to hear his explanations... -Well, we are leaving now, Sir Howlier. Who are the ones to go first?"- Kirk asked. -"To go where, Captain?"- Maora asked. -"To my ship...to take a bath!"- Kirk smiled. -"I will go myself first, with two other men."- Sir Howlier said. -"All right, then."- Kirk asked to be beamed up , and they went to the Enterprise, and following that, Maora and his retinue was beamed up to the "Parlons". After some hours at the "Enterprise", eating and bathing, Sir Howlier send his men back, and the rest came in. He was invited by Kirk to dine, so he stays ... Sulu was informed of this, too, but he decline the invitation... At eight, the officers not on duty aboard the "Enterprise" and Sir Lawrence Howlier seats at the dinning room. The wines, the meat and fresh vegetables were all in white dishes, shining under the lights. -To Earth !"- Kirk said, rising his cup. Everyone else did likewise, and then they drink and seats down. They chat amiably about the life on board , and Sir Howlier said:"-I am also a chemist! I developed a strong virus, capable of to erase all Ghamcunin beings out of existence, preserving our own life!" Everyone looked at him and his glass; the Sir was a heavy drinker... -Believe me ! I had several months in outer space, together with the fossils and corpses of old ghamcunins...I began searching for the thing that makes them tick, and ends by finding a strong venom for everyone of them!" -With your virus we could win the war!"- McCoy said. -Yes ! But it is preset the minor detail of how we could infect them all!"- Sir Howlier said, banging the table. -"We can return back the prisoners..."- Spock said, looking the matter in a simpler way... -I would like to know your opinion, Doctor Spock. And for that purpose, you, Sir Howlier, could you show your samples to our doctor?"- Kirk asked. -Of course! "- Sir Howlier replied, drinking another glass of Chilean wine... McCoy went to the "Aullador" and saw the samples and the experimentations of Sir Howlier, and was impressed. Back at the Enterprise, he told Captain Kirk:"- This Englishman is a real genius. We could present all this matter to the consideration of Starfleet Command." -I ll see what I can do."- Kirk said. And he called Headquarters; from there, he was summoned together with the chemist and Doctor McCoy, plus the samples. He went there in a scout vessel of the "Parlons II". The reunion was in Mars Station, and Sir Howlier presents there his viruses; the same were used in several prisoners, who died in seconds. -"Guess we can use this. You are going to receive a medal and a nice sum of money." - Commander Ramon Cornejario said, after the final analysis in the Mars Station Laboratories. The President of the Federation of Planets (Caledon Clements) invited them to the reception. In the grand reception area on Mars Starbase , built for diplomatic functions of considerable importance, the motley group of Enterprise personnel looked out of place in their rumpled Class-B uniforms. None of them, Uhura thought, looked more out of place, however, than Pavel. Despite his officer's full dress, he looked like an artist's rendition of exhaustion. There was one among this"last call" group who looked as dignified and proper as the hall seemed to expect. His uniform was well-pressed, and his one simple piece of luggage contrasted sharply with the unseemly me langes of souvenirs grouped at the feet of some of the others. He was, perhaps, twenty. He looked hardly old enough for startup service, much less for the lieutenant's insignia on his right shoulder. Uhura noticed a pair of dark eyes, centered on a light- complexioned face, which stared, almost lost, at one of the large, octagonal ceiling screens with its view of the massive Enterprise. She had met him two years ago, before his graduation from command school: Lieutenant Terrence Arthur Metcalfe. One of Spock's more promising and enthusiastic students, he had served last year with Sulu aboard the USA "Pegasus". He noticed her and smiled happily. "Commander Uhura." "Lieutenant Metcalfe." "You remembered." "I'd hardly have forgotten." His smile became somewhat shy, and he asked hesitantly, "Is that good, or bad?" "Which applies to the Kobayashi-Maru?" His look of friendly confidence returned. "I did eliminate an entire Klingon detachment." Uhura raised an eyebrow pointedly. "And an entire starship as well." "Captain Spock found my solution quite logical," he reminded her pleasantly. She rubbed her thigh dramatically. "I found it quite painful." He laughed quietly. He was, she decided, rather brash and cocky; but something about him was quite likable, something that reminded her of someone she had known fifteen years ago. Sir Howlier received his medal and also a check for 39.999 thousand credits. He was in haste to spend that money in reparations ! His own ship was almost a wreck. They eat lobsters, chicken meat, wines and a lot of potatoes, all imported from Earth, and served in beautiful white and blue china . After that, Mardison Frander, Commander , told Kirk:" -You are going to be the one, Captain! " -"What are you suggesting, Commander?"- -"You are going to carry those ghamcunins to the main planet, and then you will leave them free there; we had told Sir Howlier to do a milder virus, so the sickness could be not as a gunshot! A pair of days, and the pandemic could be unleashed ! "- Frander said, with red eyes. -"Well, I guess it s a dirty war!"- Kirk replied, as he was not happy to be infecting innocent beings... -"We must defeat those aliens, Captain Kirk! It s them or us!"- Frander almost yelled. Kirk awaits for six days for the virus to be prepared in the Mars Station facilities. Then, he was send back to the "Enterprise" in a small frigate. -"We are going to depart in eight hours, and I want all systems checked!"- Bellowed Kirk by the Intercom. He was in a bad temper. Soon the "Enterprise" s corridors were a rat-race , as everyone was doing as he told. -I bring you your medicine."- McCoy told him, presenting him with a cup with whisky, in the middle of the main deck. -Thanks. I needed it !"- Kirk smiled, drinking. -"We are going to be in a suicide mission! We should say good bye to the good days with a ball."- McCoy whispered him. -"Good idea. Tell everybody to stop working and we can begun dancing in the hull."- Kirk grumbled. -"Think how a ball would rise the spirits ! Death is not a good cheering perspective."- McCoy told him, carrying out the cup. At eight, Captain Kirk said by the Intercom:"- Crew of the "Enterprise" : we are about to begin a dangerous trek to the heart of the enemy strongholds! I ask not more than what I know you are going to gave me: your full capacities at all times ! But also, I know this is a time when man thinks of the final departure. And I don t want sad thoughts in the "Enterprise"! So we are going to have a party in the dinning hall!" McCoy smiled when hearing it, in the Infirmary. Kirk was a good lad! The captain went to his cabin, and sat at his desk, glasses perched on his nose, reading a book he had found in one of the shops on Mars Starbase . It was a battered specimen, its cover well-worn and many of its pages no longer fastened in place; but it had intrigued him when he found it tossed in a scattered lot of items of which the shopkeeper apparently did not know or care the value. Kirk had purchased it as an addition to his antique collection, some of which he had brought with him to decorate his cabin. He owned several copies of books by Shakespeare, Dickens, Shelley and countless others; but this George Lucas was one he had heard nothing of. A buzz sounded from the door. As he expected, it was McCoy."Hey, Jim. We ready to dance ?" "Guess I will read a little, first. "Well?" McCoy grinned impatiently. -"Are you going to dance or not?" Kirk's tone held a touch of harshness. "Do I need to have my decisions approved, Doctor?" McCoy's eyebrows arched. "No. Just thought I'd suggest--" "I'll make my own decisions, Bones." "Now, what the hell brought that on?" The doctor demanded. "As your chief medical officer--" "Temporary chief medical officer." Kirk smiled imperceptibly. "For a temporary captain," McCoy shot back in disgust, and leaves the room....... In the dining room, the music was loud and gay. In his cabin, Chekov was seated. Chekov knew he should be happy to be on the Enterprise, but he hadn't been happy in quite some time. He knew, also, that everything Uhura had said made perfect sense; but perfect sense just didn't seem to apply now. He sighed and hefted his bag onto the bed. Tossing clothes madly to the floor, he pulled out a small bottle of vodka. He was sure sooner or later someone would say, "Pavel, haven't you been drinking a lot lately?" Well, the hell with them; he could worry for himself. Alcoholism had never been any problem of his. He gratefully gulped down the contents of the bottle, assuring himself that this drink would be one of his last now that he was back. Being a simple security chief would be a welcome change. Perhaps he could iron out the wrinkles in his life now that he didn't have the stresses of an exec position on him, as he had on Reliant. Leave it to Uhura; she had been an exec before with Spock and had served as Kirk's assistant for three years. Chekov had decided this past furlough to avoid command responsibilities for now. Throwing the empty bottle in the wastebasket, he continued to unpack, picking up clothes off the floor and stuffing them into various drawers. Tossing a handful of tapes from the bottom of his bag on the desk, Chekov pulled the collar of his tunic loose, preparing to take a shower. He felt completely filthy and sweaty and looked like an unwashed Cossack. Before he could remember where he'd put the towels, the intercom buzzed. "Dammit! Chekov here," he said, not bothering to wonder how much of his response had been picked up on the other end. It was Kirk. He smiled congenially. "Mr. Chekov, could you report to my quarters for a moment? There's something I'd like to discuss with you." "Aye, sair," he grumbled. "I will be there ln a moment." "Now what?" He flicked off the com by snapping his tunic against it. Putting his uniform back on, he tried to make himself as presentable as humanly possible. He hoped Kirk wouldn't smell the vodka on his breath. Kirk didn't like the way Chekov sounded. He wasn't normally so dull, nor so careless about what he said over the ship's intercom. He'll cheer up, Scotty assured himself, as soon as he hears. Scotty had been more than happy to step down as second officer. It hadn't been a position he'd asked for in the first place, being an engineer who loved his engines. He hadn't been asked to move aside--his friends would never have imposed so. But he knew Jim Kirk, and he knew who would be picked; so he had made some altogether unnecessary excuses and stepped aside. It was, after all, important to Chekov's well-being that he get back on his feet so soon after the loss of his ship. So Scotty was quite pleased to be called to Kirk's quarters as soon as it was announced that Chekov was aboard. He was in no doubt about Jim's decision for a replacement. The door buzzed and Kirk gave the voice response which opened it. Chekov waited hesitantly ln the office door. Scotty had never seen a man look so exhausted. "Welcome aboard," Kirk said."Come in." He shuffled a few steps forward. Scotty thought for a moment that the door might clip him on the shoulder. "Thank you, sir." His manner was unsettling. He didn't even look up from the floor when he spoke. From the desk where she reclined on one arm of Kirk's chair, Uhura exchanged worried glances with Scotty. "Hullo, Pavel," Scotty said, hoping to provoke a more decided expression of feeling from the young security chief. "Mr. Scott," Chekov acknowledged coldly. Scott was irked by that. What had happened to "Scotty?" "You asked for me to report, Admiral," Chekov asked tersely. "Yes, Mr. Chekov," Kirk grinned. Scotty knew better than to think Kirk hadn't noticed Pavel's depression. No, Jim was too sharp to miss that; he was probably Just ignoring it in hopes that it would pass with time. "Mr. Chekov, you must be aware that there are some great changes taking place in the Enterprise's command ranks. One about which you may not have heard affects you directly." Here it comes, Scotty told himself confidently. We'll have the lad smiling yet. But Pavel Chekov's expression was one of hesitance, not anxious curiosity. Kirk signalled that it was Scotty's turn to continue this presentation. "Mr. Scott?" He cleared his throat. Please, Pavel, couldn't you at least pretend to be interested? "Y'see, Pavel, I, ugh, I've been thinking' aboot my position as second officer; an' I think it's aboot time I took a step down. There's really no point in m'keepin' a Job I havna' time fr' any more," he laughed as lightly as possible, "is there? Especially since there's s' many younger lads t'take over and move up in the ranks." Chekov knew exactly what they were saying. Why was he being so damned straight-faced about it all? He merely clung to the door, staring painfully straight ahead as if they were the Spanish Inquisition. Kirk smiled proudly despite it all and continued his speech in ceremonious tones. "So, Mr. Chekov, with an opening in the second slot, and given your outstanding record, I have no choice as acting commander but--" Chekov interrupted, his face slightly more animated. "Sir, I know what you are saying, but I do not believe--" Kirk had sensed Chekov's denial and immediately cut him off. "Mr. Chekov, the second officer's position is an extremely important one. The selection of an officer to fill it is not a duty I take lightly. If, for some reason, Commander Uhura and I are unavailable on the bridge, I need to know that I have the best possible back-up. You, Mr. Chekov, are he." But it did him no good. Chekov was going to insist on being depressed. "Sir, I...do not think that I am the proper choice. My conduct ln the Reliant affair...I was responsible for the deaths of --" Kirk's next reaction caught Scotty somewhat off guard. "Mr. Chekov," he demanded loudly,"are you insinuating that I would make an unworthy choice for a position of responsibility aboard my ship?" The outburst was effective. "No, sir," Chekov said, astounded. "But--" "Then I'll hear no more of this," Kirk continued furiously."I need the best officers aboard this ship up there to back me up, and I Intend to have them. Dismissed!" Mouth open, Chekov wandered dazedly back out the door he had stuck to. As soon as it shut, Uhura said simply, "I'm worried about him." "After the traumatic experiences he's been through," Kirk said with great sympathy,"some guilt and depression is natural. We just can't let him get carried away." She grimaced skeptically, "He's had weeks to sort this out." "From personal experience, Commander," Kirk whispered,"weeks aren't enough." "You may be right, Jim,. Scotty agreed."But if he doesna' improve soon--" "He will. Chekov's always been dependable." "And you, Admiral?" Uhura asked ln a most probing tone. Kirk looked up sharply. "Can we depend on you? Are you here to stay this time?" She had hit a nerve with that one; Jim was on the edge of losing his cool. "That's my business, Uhura." A moment later he added brusquely, "That is all." Her hand came to his arm, clutching gently and affectionately. "Jim," her voice was quiet now, with the gentle, even seductiveness of the woman she rarely allowed herself to be ln these situations. Scotty could see Kirk's face begin to melt; he chuckled to himself. "Please don't hide from your friends. We want to help." Scotty needed to add nothing. She had said it all perfectly. She was, after all, the communications officer. "I know, Uhura," he said with equal gentleness, "but I have to make this decision alone. It's my responsibility to decide what's best for my ship." That seemed to satisfy her for now. Mac Coy, after leaving so furiously the Captain s cabin, went to the Infirmary.... "Where the hell have you been?" Christine Chapel whirled around in surprise. McCoy had surprised her at the office door. "What?" she asked, baffled. McCoy stalked angrily into the office behind her, frowning at the stacks of reports covering the desk. "You were supposed to be in here finishing the equipment checks," he growled. "We've got to be ready for this monster to warp out in an hour, Doctor!" Her mouth twisted in annoyance. "I was attending to the needs of the crew," she said defensively, adding"sir" as a sarcastic afterthought. "Dammit, Chris, we've got deadlines to meet!" He began to shuffle madly through the reports, then asked with bothered interest. "What crew?" There was a moment of discomfort. "Lieutenant Saavik," she muttered, addressing the floor. He let a grin slip by. "Maternal Instincts Chris?" She held her chin up. "I...was taking her...something to make her feel a little more... comfortable. That 's part of my job!" she finished, bristling. McCoy felt embarrassed himself. He shouldn't make fun of Chris. She was undoubtedly trying to deal with her own grief by developing protective feelings toward Spock's protege. He wondered how Saavik would handle it. "It was nice gesture, Chris," he said gently, angry at himself for venting his frustrations on her. She didn't react. He hoped his carelessness hadn't done too much damage. He fumed back to his work. As he prepared to play one of the reports, however, Christine asked,"Is something wrong, Leonard?" "Jim," he said simply. "What about him?" Good question. Exactly what did have him so angry? "He's been. . ...well, distant. It's as if he were angry or afraid of..." McCoy spread his hands in a confused gesture. "I don't really know how to put it. He Just isn' t himself." "What 's 'himself, ' Leonard?" she asked mysteriously. ''I don ' t follow you." "It's quite simple, really. We discussed once before his dependence on command. Well, he's been away from it for ten years. He's a different person now. The 'self' he used to be no longer exists. He's been too rushed from one situation to another to create a new identity." "Are you suggesting that his personality's unstable?" McCoy asked worriedly. Christine smiled tropically. "You're the psychologist, Doctor." She became more serious. "I wouldn't be worried about him yet. He just needs to readjust. He doesn't even know how long he'll have the Enterprise this time." He grimaced. "And he won't let me discuss it with him either. Why won't he talk to me? He needs friends now more than ever." Chapel wrapped a sympathetic arm around his shoulders and said quietly,"Now, more than ever, he needs to know he can make it alone." Captain's Log, Stardate: 8142.7 Admiral James T. Kirk in command. The Enterprise is en route to a rendezvous with death at the Orion Constellation, carrying a cardload of viruses capable of to kill a whole specie.Appended herein are the forms pertaining to Commander Chekov's assignment as second officer. His response to the announcement of this assignment is not what I or any of my officers had expected. It is my considered opinion that his apparent depression is related to the destruction of the USS Reliant and the death of Clark Terrell. I am confident that he will soon recover, however, I am prepared to recommend psychiatric treatment to Ship's Surgeon McCoy should this persist...if we are not all kill first!" ----- Kirk called Sulu and Noemi , so he speaks to them both at the same instant; he said:"- I am leaving orbit, Captains ! I will go in some errand to enemy sector. I hope you could be as peacefully as we have been until now!" -"Captain! Are you sure ? But there is danger outside ! Why don t you ask for me to accompany you?"- Sulu said, concerned. -"And me ! I am bored stiff in this ring around the sun !" - Noemi said with emotion. -"This is a direct order from Headquarters, so I can do my best and obey orders."- Kirk informed. -"Well, Captain, I will call Headquarters and I will ask a permission to accompany you!"- Sulu said. -"And the same thing I am going to do!"- Noemi said. The "Enterprise" begun speeding up and soon was a speck in the darkness of outer space.... Mission Orion. Kirk was calculating orbits with Spock, when Uhura said:"- We are being followed, Sir!" -Friend of foe? -"Guess it s a Sphere! "- Spock Said. Uhura began calling the strange ship, but then it was almost on top of the "Enterprise". A sudden brilliance on it s surface makes Kirk yell"- Shields!" A couple of second after that cry, the Xbeam ray hits the "Enterprise", eating half the energy available. -"Photon missiles ready!"- Chekov said. -Fire when ready!" -Firing !"- Chekov said. Suddenly, the Sphere was hit, and the explosion waves reached the "Enterprise", making it shiver. -Damage control here ! We have a fire in deck 23!"- A man said by the Intercom. Suddenly, all hands were fighting a huge fire exactly where the anti-alien viruses were stocked...... Five hours later, Doctor McCoy says to Kirk:"- No samples it s available, Captain! We better turns back!" -A pity."- Kirk said, returning to the Mars Base....... Uhura told mission control about the enemy attack. They were told to dock into the First manned Base, a thing they did after a day s flight... Kirk and his officers were called to a general meeting, and the Commanders of Sectors were present. -There must be an enemy conspiracy here !"- Kirk yelled to all of them. -"We have that idea in common, Captain. No need to yell here."- Commander 1 said. -"I apologize. But there must be a net of spies among us!"- Kirk replied from his seat. -"We are going to send you again, Captain, and also two other ships with different routes. We have more virus samples ready, and in hours you are going to be on your trek again. Are you satisfied?"- Asked commander 2. -Of course! But this time I ask to use the Jump inside our System!"- Kirk asked. -"It s out of the question! Too dangerous!"- Commander 2 said. Kirk looked them, and standing up, he said:Well, if I am not going to jump inside the solar system, better I ll get started . Commander 3 gave him the necessary back-up inside of a huge book, saying:- The last news from Orion, obtained with robot ships ,shows a huge concentration was in progress... Kirk went to the Enterprise in a shuttle, and when at the main control room, he said:- We are going again there, and this time we are going to speed up. Uhura said:- Are we going to be alone?- -Yes. There will be another two other ships going, but in separate ways.- Kirk informed her. Soon the ship was leaving the orbit, and increasing it s speed ,soon it was a speck among the stars....... Spock said:- No vessels in sight, Captain. We are approaching Jupiter s orbit. -Well use the it s gravity pull to fasten a little more.- Kirk said, and calibrates the better orbit for that purpose. Soon the giant of the planets grabs the Enterprise with invisible fingers, and pull it ahead as Kirk wants...Soon Jupiter was in their backs, and Saturn s orbit was surpassed in two hours. -Well leave the Pluto s orbit in eight more hours.- Chekov said. -Eight hours more, and a jump will be in progress.- Kirk smiled, for the first time since the departure...He turned back to the screen. It was easy, he thought, to lose oneself in the vast pattern of dancing stars spread in front of the bridge. "'A galaxy for every creature, a universe for every galaxy,'" he muttered under his breath. "An ancient poet's term for the infinity of the universe," he explained. "I forget which one it was." Uhura said:From Starbase in Pluto they are asking our course, captain.- -Chekov, told them where are we heading.- Kirk replied. Soon the commander at Pluto Base was in the screen. -I am Cornejario, Commander of Pluto Base. Who is in command, please? The guy was white, and with a resemblance to a rabbit... -Captain Kirk, in a special mission, Commander Cornejario. We are leaving the solar system . -Please let me confirm that information, Captain.- Cornejario said. Kirk told Spock: That Cornejario keeps on being a pain in the back- Spock stared without utter a word..... Soon Cornejario, with red hears, said they could be going without problems.Kirk replied with a "-Good bye, Commander Cornejario." Soon they were in position to made a Jump; Kirk punched the red button, and the "Enterprise " was swallowed by the Black Hole that was in front of them ,for a millisecond.... When appearing again in their normal Universe, the stars of Orion were in front of them, glittering as big jewels on the black velvet of space..... Spock looked into the star viewer; there were the normal stars of Orion Constellation shining ;the great sun Rigel, 631, 1051, 1296 and Saiph, like a southern wall, and then ,going to the center, Eta Orionis. In the belt, Mintaka, Alnilam (387) and Alnitak. To the north, Bellatrix and 663.The northern wall, with Meissa, 593 and Betelgeuse. Returning to the belt, the lonely 1477...... (The arms are not described here). -We will attack Rigel first!"- Kirk said.-"That will be our first stop; then we will go to our 631, where I expect to find our people in good health....." Rigel is a big star, and the planets orbited it at a great distance; the heat was great for the most of them, except the big Slidiel and the lesser one, Malsiderion. -"Malsiderion must be our goal. Slidiel it s not occupied ,due to the great gravity it has."- Spock told Kirk. -"Set course to Malsiderion."- Kirk said, looking at the Vulcan. Two days elapsed, they were in front of Malsiderion, and Uhura said:"-There are several radio emissions."- -"Ghamcunin, I guess. Spock, try to learn what are they saying."- Kirk asked from the Vulcan. Spock heard for half an hour those garbling messages, and said:"- Mostly indications of landing sites, Sir." -"Chekov, tell me about the size of those ships."- Kirk asked from the Russian. -"Eighty giant vessels, Captain, in a ring around Malsiderion; several thousands of cargo vessels, some of them big as cities !"- Chekov said, looking as pale as he could. -"Guess we must use our cloaking device right now. "- Kirk ordered, and the whole of the ship seems to disappear from the sky. -Spock, set course to the surface."- Kirk said, and the silence in the main deck was great..... x rigel x631 x1051 X eta orionis x1296 xSAIPH ........................................................ Malsiderion. Malsiderion, which size was similar to the Earth , had one big ocean and ice caps on the poles; the average temperature in the Ecuador was of 33 degrees Centigrade. The big portion of earth was not populated, as the Ghamcunins are like squids and they lived on the sea. So the missiles the "Enterprise" sent to the waters over the populated cities exploded and the milky substance began to dissolve itself on the waters, producing the lethal effect Lord Lawrence Howlier... In two days, most of the populace was in the bottom of the sea, rotting...Some others were in the sealed buildings, but as the virus was surrounding the buildings, their fate was sealed on. -"The biggest crime ever committed."- Doctor McCoy told Kirk, when alone in the Infirmary. -"Yes; better them than us."- Kirk replied, drinking his glass of whisky. -"The vessels up there will spread the news. Soon every planet in Ghamcunin hands will bristle with war-ships over those orbs."- McCoy said. -That reminds me we are late..."- Kirk smiled, and departed. At the control cabin, he told Chekov:"- Let s went up and away, Chekov !" The "Enterprise" soared out of the waters, and in a flash it was in outer space; and soon 23 Ghamcunin spheres were on it s tail... -"Spock: prepare a jump.Scotty: energy for a Jump. " Spock did the calculations, and said:"- We ll appear next to 631, Sir. " -All right, then. Chekov: jump when ready!" -"Jump it is !"- Chekov said, pulling the lever. The black hole appeared in front of the "Enterprise", who disappeared in a trifle.....The Spheres chased his ghost for a couple hundred leagues, before they realized the "Enterprise" was nowhere in sight... When reappearing in normal Universe, Uhura said:"- Ship ahead, sir!" -"Friend or foe?" -"Wait! They are transmitting...it s the " Parlons 2"!"- Uhura replied. Soon, the sphere was alongside the hull, and the captain Maora Noemi filled the main screen, saying:"- Ahoy, Captain Kirk ! Permission to aboard, Sir!" Kirk gave the acknowledgment, and she enter the "Enterprise" by the transporter, together with two other crew member. -"Are you finish with your job, Captain?"- Asked her, smiling. -"We are arriving from a raid to Malsiderion."- He replied. -"Oh! Must be a hard job? We already finished ours ! It was in Saiph, with three planets...we take no risks: we bombed the places with long range missiles."- Maora said. -"Fine! Well, let s talk more privately...came to my chamber."- Kirk invited her. They went there; he closed the door, and offers her a mild alcoholic drink. She said: "Oh, the flavor of scotch it s in the air ! Have you not scotch?" -Er...yes ! "- Kirk said, hesitatingly; he called McCoy for some "medicine". They waited a little while, talking about their missions; Nurse Chapel came, and delivered them a flask; she said:"- Doctor McCoy told me to bring this to you, Captain! He said it was a medicine." -All right, leave it that to me."- Kirk said, receiving the flask.Nurse Chapel looked at Maora, and depart. -"Nice looking girl, Captain. "- -"Yes, indeed. A devote of medicine, too."- Kirk said, and filled two glasses; he handled one to Maora, and drink a little. Maora takes a whole gulp and said:"- Fine scotch! Genuine, too! "-And laughed. They seated on the bed, and soon they were kissing each other; Kirk said:"- I was hunger of you!" -"When seeing death to the eyes, life is more precious!"- Maora said, undressing herself. Soon they were releasing themselves of tensions.... Some hours later, Kirk asked for food, and they keep on being in bed, laughing and sleeping. Two days elapsed, McCoy knocked on the door, and when Kirk opened the door in pajamas, he enters the room, saying :"- Oh, but is it not our beautiful Captain Noemi in your bed?" -"Yes, I am. "- Smiled her. -"Well, madam, you certainly looks younger each time I see you!"- McCoy said, standing near the bed. -"We are running out of medicine, Doctor. Please send me some more."- Kirk said, eyeing McCoy. -"Oh, but what a uncorcerned person I am ! I will call Miss Chapel right away!"- He said, and went out. -This doctor is a fine friend, too!"- Maora said, standing in all of her beauty. Kirk kissed her, and said:"- We better get dressed, before he came back!" They dressed hurriedly, just in time to see Doctor McCoy entering the room, with a big flask of scotch. -Oh, but you dressed for me ! " - He said, smiling. They all drink a little, and Kirk said:"- I am going to the main deck, now. Two days that I am ruling the ship from my cot."- McCoy said: "There is no need to get hurry! " But they all went out, and Kirk seats on his place, with Maora and McCoy at his side. Uhura said:" We received a message from headquarters, Sir. Do you want to hear it now?" -"Just tell me of what it s about, Officer."- Kirk replied. -"The message came encoded; it says that all the ships accomplished their missions; the targets received the bombs in all the Ghamcunin infested planets. WE must remain in hidden, to receive further orders." -When the message came?" -Just a few minutes, Sir!"- Uhura replied. -Good. Well, then we can rest here...Tell the crew we are going to have a little repose here."- Kirk said. -"We could exchange some crew, Captain! So they could see each other environment, for a change."- Maora told Kirk. -Splendid idea! Spock: told the crew the "Parlons" could be visited from now on!"- Kirk accepted the proposition... -"And you could go ,too . I could show you some new gadgets, there!"- Maora said. Kirk takes her by the arm, and they went to the sphere using the Transporter. -"This ship is somewhat little than yours, Captain! But my cabin have his merit!"- She told him. -"Let s see that miracle!"- Kirk replied. The cabin was a large one, and all painted in pink color... -"What a feminine environment! I feel dizzy!"- Kirk said. She grabs him and kissed a long while; then they were all eager for each other, and went to bed. -A water bed. "- She smiled, undressing herself..... ------ Two weeks there bored everyone, except, of course, to the people in love; then , a message (encrypted) told them to return to the planets where Ghamcunin has their strongholds. -I better go with you."- Maora told him. -"But you have your ship and another destination!"- Kirk replied, embracing her. -Yes, but we can go together...like a new Anthony and Cleopatra!"- Maora said, kissing him hard. Kirk accepted; they set course and went at full speed to Malsiderion. -No enemy vessels in orbit, Captain."- Spock said. _No enemy radio transmissions, Sir."- Uhura informed. Kirk smiled; perhaps the enemy was all killed ! -Send the Two scout ships down below."- Kirk told Spock. Soon, the scout ships were slicing the upper atmosphere of the planet; they traveled to different sites, and found all Ghamcunin rotting at the Mine compound... -There is a terrible sight here, Captain! More corpses everywhere you set the eyes !"- Kevin Thomas Riley (Lt.),said. From the other site, John Farrell (Lt.) told him the same thing; the enemy was totally dead. Kirk summoned the scout ships home, and departed to Saiph with Maora and the "Parlons 2" , at full speed... The three planets were orbiting silently now; all sign of life was gone. Here, the rotten corpses were also on the surface. -"Guess we can tell Headquarters that the bomb was a successful invention , and that they can send war ships and cargo vessels this way."- Maora said, smiling on the screen. -"Yes, I will do that."- Kirk said, signaling Uhura to begun the transmissions (encoded ) to Mars... Soon arrives the war ships to those alien suns; the mining bases were cleaned and put to work, this time for the benefit of Earth people. The Ghamcunin remaining vessels were gone , and the humanity reigns for ever after at the Shoulders of Orion. The End. ................ A.F.H.J.F.(30-V.1944), S.D. 730,17:10 Hrs.,2. V. Y2K, Stgo.
